When Theory Meets Practice – How Mälardalen University Students Use Calkin to Learn Smarter
In a world where education and business increasingly overlap, it’s not enough to just understand theory — students need tools that help them apply it.

At Mälardalen University (MDU), senior lecturer Cecilia Lindh is leading an initiative to integrate digital tools into the International Business course and Calkin is playing a key role. 👉 Read the full MDU article (in Swedish)
The Challenge
Students in the course work with real company cases, where they analyze data, draw conclusions, and present strategic recommendations. For many, this means wrestling with large Excel sheets and complex data structures before they can even begin solving the actual problem. The focus often shifts from analysis to simply making the tools work.
Part of the Solution - Bringing Calkin Into the Classroom
Through a collaboration between MDU and Calkin, 35 students are using the platform during the course. Calkin helps them visualize the structure and logic of Excel files, making it easier to see dependencies and data flow. The result: less time struggling with spreadsheets and more time for critical thinking and strategy. 👉 Source: MDU article
As Cecilia Lindh puts it:
“AI makes you better but it doesn’t do the work for you. We want our students to develop their analytical skills and critical thinking with the help of technology, not replace their learning with it.”
Real-World Learning
- Students handle real company data, not hypothetical cases.
- With Calkin, they can understand and structure complex spreadsheets in minutes.
- This allows them to focus on why things happen in the data, not just what the data says.
In short, Calkin becomes the bridge between academic theory and business reality, helping students build skills they’ll actually use in their careers.
Why It Matters
Today’s business world demands more than just reading and understanding data — professionals need to analyze, structure, and communicate insights clearly. As MDU notes, “The trend is clear: the ability to handle and analyze data is becoming increasingly important across industries.” By practicing this skillset early, students gain a significant head start in their professional development.
A Partnership for the Future
The collaboration between MDU and Calkin is an example of how universities and businesses can work together to raise the quality of education. For Calkin, it also marks an exciting new use case not just as a productivity tool, but as a learning platform that helps the next generation of analysts and strategists grow.
Throughout the semester, students will continue using Calkin to analyze company data and present real results to real companies. This turns theory into practice and learning into confidence.
At Calkin, we’re proud to support this initiative and look forward to expanding our work with universities that want to give students the tools, and the mindset, for smarter data-driven learning.
